The Primary Care Electronic Library grew out of the DrsDesk project and the Primary Care National electronic Library for Health (NeLH-PC). Whilst NeLH-PC was funded by the NHS Information Authority, PCEL is a research project maintained by those working on it and donations of time by primary care professionals. The site has been designed for ease of navigation with an intuitive front end. Its key features are:

  • Directory of abstacted information concerning over 1300 quality assured internet sites (resources).
  • Free text search and advanced search of PCEL directory.
  • Each resource is classified with a custom directory and MeSH terms. Both of these may be browsed using their hierarchical structure to find similar or new resources.
  • PCEL contains an RSS feed of the ten resources most recently added to the directory, and also each individual resource may be viewed as an RSS feed.
  • Users can submit new resources via online forms to be included in PCEL.
  • Information is stored regarding journal referencing of articles and Harvard and Vancouver referencing for each resource may be viewed.
  • Personalisation: users can create "My PCEL".

The internet site attracted over 50 000 page requests in August 2005.
